I've tried many materials and I always go back to bone, nothing else tops it. I just see maple nuts creating a lot of issues with tuning/stability, and it wouldn't really be lubricated.

I may have to see if I can pick up some small scraps of Lignum Vitae, and try making a nut for a bass of mine. I think it would work great.
