  • Odd shielding problem

Hey guys, so I just shielded the inside of my les paul with shielding paint to get rid of hum, seems to be working btw, so I painted every cavity and the backs of the control covers with the paint including the input jack socket and jack plate. Now heres the problem:

When the jack is all put in theres no sound from the guitar as the input jack is shoring against the paint I guess. if I remove the jack from the plate and socket and just plug in the patch cord the guitar works perfectly. So how do I fix this shorting problem? Should I not have painted the jack cavity and plate? Would a new jack plate thats not painted work? Would disconnecting the ground from the jack and wiring it somewhere else do anything? any ideas? Thanks guys

No, you just need some tape over the hot part of the plug.

Shielding the plug cavity is a good place to shield.

Some tape over the hot seems to have done it, guitar is dead quiet now, expet near flourescent lights, is it normal for flourescent lights (like a couple feet away) humming through humbuckers??

Electromagnetic radiation from the fluorescent light's transformer. Also common with CRT monitors. It's normal, and the only fix is to get away from the light, or replace the light.

No, you should be able to shut the thing up completely.

Did you do the 3-way-switch cavity?

Yeah I did everything, it only picks up the flourescents if I am literally within a couple feet of the bulb

you'll probably never get a guitar to be 100% quiet all the time. I used to have to turn my computer screen off when recording.

There is a small "hole" when the humbuckers are not covered.

In uncovered humbuckers you have the wires that connect the coils to each other and to the main lead exposed.

Flourescents and CRT monitors will always make your guitars hum if you get close enough to them. I used to get our old TV remote and point it directly at my guitar pickups while clicking the channels up and down . . . it makes a cool 'pew pew' sound too.
