  • Gibson vs Epiphone nut spacing

Ok so I measured my Epiphone nut
    And my Gibson nut
    And my Signature nut

The Epi and the Sig are Epiphone spaced at 35 mm E to E

The Gibson is 37 mm E to E

    The TusqXL Epiphone nut
World’s 1st self-lubricating nut and at the same time introduced the world to a black nut! Shop the Blank TUSQ XL nuts for your guitar, bass, ukulele, or mandolin.

The Gibson version of the TusqXL
World’s 1st self-lubricating nut and at the same time introduced the world to a black nut! Shop the Blank TUSQ XL nuts for your guitar, bass, ukulele, or mandolin.

So I like the spacing of the Gibson
    Probably won't change the Epiphone

The Sig may get a new one
The nuts seem identical with the exception of string spacing

Does anyone have any thoughts or preferences
    For one over the other?

I prefer cutting a nut from a Tusq or Corian slab because the preslotted Tusq nuts are hollow. Then you can space the strings however you want.

Aside from the spacing Gibson and Epiphone nuts aren't the same size. Mainly, I think that the Gibson nuts are narrower.

35mm if bound neck, 37mm if not.

I didn't check the links before. But checking now, they aren't identical. The Gibson nut is narrower. There are actually small differences in all dimensions if you look at the metric table (mm).

So is there a reason to have a wider nut over the more narrow one
There is the bound - unbound thing

Re: Gibson vs Epiphone nut spacing

Not sure if that's addressed to me. If so, I'm not the best man to answer. But, usually they are a little larger and require some sanding to fit flush but I would be concerned that the 1/16" difference (actually it's less if you look at the mm's) would be enough that it may not fit in the slot snug (front to back). However, I've never tried to fit a Graphtech Gibson nut to an Epiphone.
