  • NGD: Gibson "Gary Clark" SG in TV Yellow... Is this an issue?

I purchased a long awaited Gibson Gary Clark SG today from Sam Ash. The finish (back of the neck behind nut and 1st fret) has two cracks in the nitro. It doesn't look like a crack in the neck itself, just the finish. I was able to get 10% off of new pricing, but I'm still a little nervous about the cracking.

Question... Should I keep it, or return it?

If it were me, I’d return that.

lots of axes get cracks in the finish there.

Can you feel the cracks when you play?
That one might have to go back.

It looks like it is just finish cracks from here, but it would bother me. Return that puppy!

If I brush my fingers over the cracks, I can feel them. There's no break in the wood, that much I am certain of. I was thinking, that maybe I can drop-fill the cracking with nitro, wet sand, and then buff it out. But, what if the nitro doesn't "burn" all the way through the existing finish? That little voice is telling me to either leave it as is, or return it.

That's a beautiful guitar but I probably wouldn't be happy with it. It's new and expensive I'm sure, so I don't know.

That would drive me nuts on a new axe. Another "return" vote.

What specifically are you nervous about with the cracking? Those cracks are almost certainly just in the finish and not in the wood. A crack in the wood would tend to run along the grain and those cracks are definitely perpendicular to it. Structurally it should be just fine.

If you’re concerned about resale value or if it just bothers you, well, that may be a whole other matter.

I'd pay the 10% more to upgrade to the non-finish cracks version.

I care about the sound and playability more than anything. The checking does not bother me at all and it saved you 10%

Me too, but this is the only TV Yellow model I can find. The ones on eBay/Reverb are price nearly $1000.00 above retail, some higher. Plays like a dream!
