  • 10-46 using drop D

    Hi,

Iv always used regular gauge of 10-46 strings with standard E tuning. Resently did drop D on tje low E.

With the low E (according to daddario calculator) tuned to standard E will have 17.5kg of tension.
Drop D on 46 is about 14kg. Thats about 1.5kg difference.

Will the tension missmatch cause the neck to warp if i were to leave it that way for months?

    No, not likely.

but I'd do 10-52 for 10s with drop D to make it more even

Is your guitar a complete piece of sh*t? If not, no.

Agreed with the 10-52s for drop D and no it wont mess up the neck

But if using ernie balls 10-52 and drop the low E, wouldnt that still be miss matched tension?

Atleast i know now that it doesnt hurt the neck.

The neck is not made of cheese, but wood. Something that has evolved to take strain of waymore than the string tension.

There are plenty of cases of guitars with all sorts of tunings and string tensions, they survive.

            Stop overthinking things.

You will be fine, I bounce between half step down and drop D half step down and never had an issue with the neck. Dont overthink it. Tune it to drop D, play your arse off and enjoy.

If you’re concerned about the tension being off, get a 10-46 balanced tension set, and swap a 52 for the 46.

                    Thanks guys.

Its one of the best guitars i have and i might have overthought about it.

Im safe with this then. I want this guitar to be drop D while the others stay standard tuning.

Your neck is adjustable to counteract the string tension.

I use 9-46 and often play in drop D.

Unrelated but kind of funny, over on sevenstring.org, people talk about drop D, but it’s on 8 string guitars, so an octave lower.

Yeah, but loosen your truss rod all the way, and even light gauge strings will warp it into an upbow making it hard to play.

That’s why we have truss rods.
