  • NGD pickup recommandation (with top spruce)

I usually do not post NGD... But well this time I need recommandation for a sprice top with maple sides.
Thinking of the JB... But I am afraid brightness fighters will recommend against...

Kidding apart I haven't play acoustic for over 12 years and this one which is a Gibson J-200 copies made in 1977 by Aria at Matsumoku is a revelation for me ! It is caled Aria AF-255 Mach I (some were made in 1976 as well).

Shining treble, velvet yet powerful mids and big bass without EQ
The dynamic range is impressive also : you can either wisper or hurt your hears with the volume and the string separation is great.

So I will play acoustic now

What a very cool, old guitar! Thanks for sharing!
(but I'd go for a Black Winter in maple/spruce)

Thanks Dave. I will definitely go for the BW !

Euh Actually I am going to order a Black Winter (bridge first) for another guitar (X-88) and I remember you posted a link to help choosing between the Trembucker and the HB. Is said the Trembucker is when the string spacing exceeds 50 mm over the pup.

But that guitar is on the borderline, maybe exceeding the limit by some fraction of millimeter... Should I go then for the TB ?

I think it's from high e to low e spacing
          String spacing over 50 mm

The trembucker has wider set poles
          At 52 mm

Measure the outside spacing if your string where the pickup will reside

If less than 50 mm get a standard version
If more than 50 mm then trembucker

I may have misunderstood your post
          And muddled it up

I meant : even at just 50,5 or 50,2 mm Trembucker is better, right ?

Well, with higher output pickups like the BW, it won't matter, sound-wise. It will 'hear' the strings just fine either way. But I might opt for the non-Trembucker:

Trembuckers are recommended for the bridge position. Trembuckers are designed for wider string most commonly associated with Floyd Rose or vintage vibrato bridges (often called Tremolos) with a string spacing of 2.070″ or 52.6mm, measured center of high string to center of low string over the bridge pickup. Humbuckers are designed for bridges with traditional Gibson humbucker string spacing of 1.930″ or 49mm, measured center of high string to center of low string over the bridge pickup.

                Thanks.
The stock bridge pickup (at 49 mm) is actually too narrow (The neck is spot on).
I think the spacing over the bridge pup is close to 51 mm. It may work either way, but I think I'll order the Trembuckers.

Anyway it is good that Seymour Duncan gives the choice.

Don't forget the spray expanding foam for the inside to reduce feedback....you need to find the stuff that looks the ugliest for you know, the 'metal effect'

Then I would like some genuine moss. I mean like the green moss on a tree bark.

And anyone has experience with the strings Gibson makes for Jumbo guitars ?
I am thinking of trying the J-200 Phosphor bronze, gauge 12-53.

But I saw there is also a more bend friendly J-200 UL (Ultra Light) Gibson set : 11-52.
                    (And similarly a D'addario EJ26 Custom Light 11-52)
But will I loose some of the huge tone ?

(I use 10-46 on most Electric guitars, sometimes 11s)

One good thing with the "light" (it's called like this) 12-16-24-32-42-53 is that you can downtune. And I can do some real bends, not just half tone after lubing the nut slots.

I replaced the 12s on my Epiphone Hummingbird with the extra light 10s the came on my Martin

                      The volume was reduced dramatically
But it was much easier to play

Duncan Slug with a transtrem haha. I wish I could help you, acoustic pickups are totally out of my realm of understanding though.

                          Beautiful guitar though.
