Gibson ES 335

Hi guys,

A friend of mine has a guitar he might want to sell.

1978 Gibson ES 335. tobacco sunburst.

The guitar has a coil-tap siwtch (stock), original pickups, and the trapeze has been replaced with a stop tailpiece.

What's a good estimate of value?

Who could he go to get an estimate?

you tell him i could probably go....$300 bucks max...and that's stretching it!

seriously though....just check ebay...under completed items for gibby 335's...that should give you a pretty good estimeat of "acv" = actual cash value...!?

Estimated value of 70's probably between $1500-$2000, the best ones are the mid '60's IMO

I agree. My friend has a 1970 ES335 that was appraised at $1500 by Mandolin Bros. back in the early 90's, so this one shopuld be worth a few bucks to say the least.

It'll depend on what the reputation for Norlin-era Gibson 335's is. 78 is not associated with any glory years at Gibbie.

That's true, but 70s fenders and gibsons are rising in value despite the fact that they are generally the turkeys of the vintage market. It's a lot to do with the rarity and extreme price of 50s and 60s models.

My starting guess is that if it's the real 335 semi-hollow (and not the 335 S that they made during those years, too), it's worth about $900-1000. Late 70's - early 80's Gibsons are not some of the better years made. I don't remember a coil splitter switch on the hollow bodied versions of 335's though. Is it stock? There was a coil split on the 335-S Deluxe model, at least in the 80's. Those, at the very most, are worth about $750. My firm belief is that there is NO used guitar worth more than $350-400. You pay more than that because you want the guitar. And yes, I do know the value of Les Pauls, it's just that everyone wants those instruments! Having said that, I also believe that if you pick up an instrument and it says to you "Take me home....you need me...", you should do what you can to own it.
