Pedals for that early Weezer sound?

That thick and dark fuzzy crunch on blue and pinkerton is so good. I've heard Boss DS-2s are good at early Weezer stuff, is this true?

I have a DS1 , I think it's good at that fuzzy, thick but fizzy crunch that sort of blends into the mix... A DS2 is that sound, with an optional mid boost? Would probably work well.

He was using a Mitchell amp based on a Mesa on the blue album and I think a Mesa Heartbreaker on 'Pinkerton' so something with a Boogie flavor should get you there.

Yeahh i mean it's just a thick rock tone. You can use a lot of pedals to get there. Big Muff, DS-1, maybe one of those Mesa pedals.

Get the foundation of your gain from a hard driven amp. A good chunky grunt.
Then stack either a Muff ontop or a medium gain distortion pedal.

The thing about the Weezer sound to me is that it's not necessarily a "good" guitar sound; it fits the music. But it sounds like a pedal. I also agree, you can probably make a Mesa sound that way.

(While I do find that the DS1 sounds good into a distorted amp if you keep the drive low, it doesn't sound "Weezer" to me that way. And I don't hear a Muff into a driven amp getting that close.)

I googled this; I can totally hear "amp at quiet listening volume with preamp cranked" being that sound. I still think a DS1 would do a good job of replicating it live.

Also responsible for that sound is the Mesa Boogie, which was still in top condition at this time. The Mesa was run through the tall Marshall, often at unusually low volume, to get some of the sounds on the album. As far as I know, there are NO effects pedals on the guitar sounds on the Blue Album. Rivers would not start really fooling around with recording with effects and pedals till later...

Are there any pedals even cheaper than the Mesa Throttle Box that can produce those types of tones?

One diehard blue album / pinkerton fan to another: USA Big Muff with the gain way low, or Taiwan DS-1 with the gain like half way. That'll get you close while you save up for a Mark V or an Orange Rockerverb.
