Pedal for Metallica into clean channel

Another question about distortion pedals.
I am looking for a pedal for that RTL/MOP tone to put in between my guitar and the clean channel on my tubemeister. Right now I'm running everything off my gt8 through the amps fx loop and I feel like I can get a better sound with a distortion pedal in front of the amp.
What do you guys recommend. I hear very mixed opinions on the metal zone. Have also heard good things about the boss sd-1. Also considering the metal muff because of the top boost for solos.

Re: Pedal for Metallica into clean channel

A couple of comments -

#1 I would seriously work on the Tube Meister's dirt channel knobs. I can't imagine you can't get there with that.

#2 I would just run the GT8 straight in. again - so MANY models. Some judicious eq should get you there.

Finally - and this is often the case - the studio absolutely has some super tight delay / verb mixed down in there. It's as important to that ultra crunchiness as the Marshall themselves. They key is really finding the balance between the wet and dry sounds.

Pedals? Maybe a Metal Muff with the top turned up and the distortion turned down?

Maybe I need to muck around with it some more but I could t quite get it there with the crunch channel.

I did however find that a combination of the amps crunch channel and the metal zone on the gt8 got me A LOT closer although the lead boost on the amp is a bit much

I'm not running any pre amps off my gt8 is it still better to go into the amp input with the gt8 instead of the 4 cable method or running a guitar signal into the amp and then gt8 effects in the loop?

Right now I'm using the 4 cable method but I'm planning on having this setup:

Guitar > wah > metal zone > amp
Amp fx loop = gt8 ( eq > delay > reverb)

Re: Pedal for Metallica into clean channel

You should be able to get there with the GT-8 in the 4 cable setup, not sure why you think you need to add more. Running the GT just in the fx loop is a huge waste IMHO, but it's all ice cream.

The big thing is to spend some serious time figuring out and programming the GT-8 and you should be able to get what you want.

Also, connecting the fx loops together like in you picture won't do anything, I see what you are trying to do, but the mono output of the GT needs to go back to the amp.

ok thanks for the help!

Re: Pedal for Metallica into clean channel

The 4 cable method is the ideal way to get the most out of the GT-8. Your wiring diagram is all wrong.
It goes like this
GUITAR OUT>>>>YOUR WAH>>>>GT-8 INPUT>>>SEND TO FRONT OF YOUR AMP>>>>AMP EFFECTS LOOP SEND>>>>RETURN OF THE GT8>>>>OUTPUT OF THE GT8>>>>RETURN OF YOUR AMPS EFFECTS LOOP.
You don't need the Metal zone at all as the GT-8 has one built in and they sound about exactly the same.
Using the Amp modelers in the GT-8 , I didn't use them either as I like my amp and like how it sounds so the GT-8 becomes a controlled center and a full on effects processor with Drive and OD out front of your amp while putting modulation type effects in the loop.
Level matching is the hardest thing to get right but over time you'll get it to where you like it.
To get Metallica sound , they use mesa Boogie amp and a lot of gain. It's not a heard tone to pull off. I suggest dialing in your Tube Meister's dirt channel the best you can then add a OD pedal in front of it, not the metal zone. Use a OD-1 or a Tubes screamer and you'll get very close. Use low gain on the OD or Tube screamer and just push the front end of your amp a bit harder and you will be able to dial in the tightness you want with the crushing raw power Metallica tone has.

One cool thing about the 4CM is that you can program some patches to use the amp's preamp and other patches to use the built in amp models and bypass the amp's preamp.

Re: Pedal for Metallica into clean channel

went to the 4cm and got my amp control hooked up
a lot closer to what i want
thanks for your help!!

Re: Pedal for Metallica into clean channel

I'm also going to say that you'll probably need to use different settings on the GT8 or your amp if you want to nail both RTL and MOP. RTL is more mid heavy/tube screamer pushing a Marshall sounds. MOP is scoop mids/amp distortion mesa pre-amp type of sound. (Think they used a Mesa 2C+ slaved to a Marshall EL34 power section) Two very different sounds. If you want some hybrid/in the territory, then you can probably use one setting.

Re: Pedal for Metallica into clean channel

Ditch the floor unit.
Plug straight in via the pedal(s) of your choice after trialling a few.
Less cables, better tone.

Re: Pedal for Metallica into clean channel

No matter the question, someone will suggest the opposite because it is what they like. The GT is a fine unit if you tweak it to do what you want. Nuno Bettencourt used a GT8 on the last few Extreme tours, although he only used it for mod and delay effects in the fx loop.

That said, I don't have a problem with individual pedals either, I've used both. I currently use a GT-100 because it works for what I do and I can plug into whatever power amp is available, which at church is currently a H&K TM18, but I use the models in my GT and just plug into the fx return on the TM. The TM seems like a fine amp, but I never get a chance to play with it that much or write patches to specifically work with it, so it's easier just to program models in my patches and plug in and go when I get there.

I've been playing at home using the tm18 on no speaker mode and running the di to my computer with headphones on and I got it sounding pretty good to my ears. I have the gt8 in 4cm and
