  • Replacement for a MXR Super Badass Distortion?

Recently I've been using an MXR Super Badass Distortion pedal after the guitar store clerk recommended it to me with a Jimmie Vaughan strat and the sound is decent but not really what I'm looking for, the sound is particularly saturated, thin and a bit too coloured.

I'm ideally looking for something in the "aggressive overdrive territory", but not to the point where it doesn't sound organic and becomes overly saturated. I'm thinking of selling the Badass and replacing it with either a Fulltone Robin Trower Overdrive (as it has the aggressiveness of the Full-Drive and the characteristics of an OCD), a JHS Angry Charlie, an EVH 5150 Overdrive or the Way Huge Doubleland/Overrated Special (as I am a fan of adjustable midrange hump).

    What do you suggest?

    Keeley Katana.
Clean boost that just gives you more.
Unless you pull out the volume knob.
Then it gives you more, with hair.

Do you get all your dirt from the pedal, or you use a crunchy amp and boost it?

I've used a stock Blues Driver, a Keeley Blues Driver, a Super Overdrive, a Marshall Jackhammer, a Jet City Afterburner and a few Joyo/Mooer pedals.

For grit, nothing beats the Blues Driver but it needs an amp that's breaking up a bit. In front of a clean Fender it's gonna hurt.

Also the Zvex SHO is wonderful for this. It's a huge volume boost with very little compression, so the picking dynamics are kept intact. I love that.

I dislike pedals that sound "like pedals". Those two don't.

Yeah - I'm feeling a TS9 level boosted dirty amp.....or some low gain high level OD pedal.

        What amp?

I'm thinking our friend here might find a TS9 to be a bit too smooth. I don't like Tubescreamers through my rig for that reason, unless I'm using single coils and I'm aiming for a vintage flavored tone. So this definitely depends on the rest of his gear, though.

I like darker amps, so they don't work for me.
