What’s an example of that in 80s metal? Vocals or guitar?

Eventide H910 was the first one in 1975. Been used on countless albums and many different instruments (snare on AC/DC's Back In Black album, for ex)... vocals too.

The 80's was the chorus (many times, an Eventide set as a micropitch setting in stereo) decade.

Guitar-wise, EVH for example progrssively used more and more Eventide (as micropitch) on his tone.

You can do some EPIC chorus with that.

And get the dual delay/chorus 5150 sounds.

I was stoked until I realized it was a Plugin

Is this thing really any good or did they just take some generic piece and slapped a famous brand name on it?

While I didn't buy this plugin (I have the Eventide Anthology), it looks almost exactly like my Eventide Pitchfactor's software (which controls the PitchFactor via USB if you want, vs. manual knobs).

I think for the discount price, if you're into pitch-shifting/doubling, it's a no brainer. Even at the normal price ($99), it's a steal. This is the sound that is on countless big-time records; on different instruments and vocals.

Two voices of pitch shifting, one from unison to -50 cents, the other from unison to +50 cents, each with up to 2 seconds of delay
              Classic stereo-spreading effect
Slapback effects using longer delay times
TONE for fine-tuning the voices to fit perfectly in your mix
PITCH MIX for layering the two voices by setting the balance between each shifted delay
MOD DEPTH and RATE for a chorusing effect on each voice
              FEEDBACK for pitch dive/rise effects
Intuitive UI for ease of use
Tempo for synchronized and unique delay effects
Presets based on iconic uses of the MicroPitch effect
RIBBON lets you ‘play’ the effect in real-time and provides dynamic and fluid control to morph back and forth between the settings of your choice
MIXLOCK keeps MIX control constant as you audition presets
Available for Mac and PC as VST, AAX, and AU plug-in

A fun bonus with gear like this is you can "chipmunk-itize" or "devil-ize" your voice.
