pickup help

hey guys, im replacing the pickups on my epiphone gothic flying vee, and im undecided about which pickups get. i play metal and hard rock, and i want some pickups with a lot of midrange punch, and the stock epiphone pickups were pretty pathetic. any ideas?

Welcome to the forum. I would say try the duncan distortion. Awesome pup for metal, however its cleans are not the best if that is a concern. I would also consider the JB. It's versitle, nice cleans and has a well defined tone.

for the bridge the jb would be great. jb is used a lot for metal n hard rock tunes, it does cleans pretty well too, plus the jb has pretty good mids n lots of highs. that would be for the bridge.
as for the neck i persoanlly use dimarzio's paf pro because of its nice 'aw' tone. plus theres a nice amount of mids there too which i think is a really good pup for soloing.

JB for soloing- it has a lot of warmth and some great harmonic response. DD has more crunch- better suited for rythem playing. Good luck, and welcome to the forum!

hmm... i was thinking about a JB/Jazz combination, i know mustaine uses that in his flying vee... but a dimarzio tone zone/norton combination also looks good... im shopping around

the jb/jazz is a pretty versatile setup IMO.
as for the tonezone/norton, it would really depend on what kinda wood ur body is made of and wat amp u are playing though, because the tonezone tends to get muddy easily with its boosted mids and bass.

the specs of the guitar are:

body: mahogany
neck: mahogany
fingerboard: ebony
bridge: string through body
neck: set

as for amps, i play through a lot of different setups that i borrow or rent, and i dont have a decent sized amp of my own.. as im poor and have no money

although i do prefer tube amps to solid state, and i usually play through a tube if i can get one

and for the neck, the jazz is always a good choice. as is the 59. but if you do more soloing in the enck position, i highly recommend the paf pro for enck. great lead tone.

would a norton or FRED be good in the neck with a JB? i do a lot of soloing in the neck position, but as im the only guitarist in the band, i alternate between rhythm and lead a fair bit.

im pretty sure now that a JB will go in the bridge

and its a Norton, FRED or Jazz in the neck

hmm, thats cool man, soloing is gooood! haha
well aiight i think its advisable to stay away from the tonezone for now.
hmm, JB in the bridge is definitely a good choice as i've said eariler,
now as for neck, the FRED can do a really god job as well, slightly more output than the paf pro, with about the same specs just that the FRED to me sounds like its got more highs than the paf pro and also without much of that 'aw' characteristic.

but both fred and paf pro are good choices. as for the norton, i cant comment much on that in the neck.

I didn't know the Dimarzio neck pickups were so good. It sounds like they have quite the reputation! Plus Satch, Vai, and Yngwie all use them.... *shrugs*

well ive asked around.. and after much deliberation i think ill go for the JB/Fred
