  • pickup combination for a progressive metal sound?

yeah, kind of a stupid question but just wondering.

im gonna be starting a progressive rock band with my friends. and just thinking if there would be any sort of style of pickup, or eq type that would work well with progressive metal?
i guess a hot pickup would do nice for the bridge pickup. something like the DD and Custom for the duncans. for 6 strings as well as 7 strings. or the standard dimarzio stuff, steve special and air norton
i dont know about a neck pickup for this stuff in the duncan line, im guessing the DD for neck position for more "shreddy" moments. something with mids would be key, and the treble works well too
i dont really have the guitar as of right now, but im guessing i'd just get an ibanez rg320fm and replace the bridge with an edge or lo pro edge or original floyd rose trem. i'd probably do the petrucci wiring too with the 3 way switch and tye middle position(i think) with both humbuckers split for better clean tones.
i'd like something with clarity and good harmonics which is why i picked the DD and custom. the nice smooth neck pickup, like the DD.

i think im going in the right direction with this but just wanted to ask you guys too see what you think.

sounds like a plan. I think that for Prog stuff, you would need a ton of clarity under gain, so perhaps a Full Shred (n)/DDb combo might work.
    Ain't nothin' but a G thang, baby.

      yeah

thats what i really want, clarity. and since i dont use high gain, im able to get that real easily. i never would've thought of the full shred though?
from what dime has said, it is said to have a pretty nice clean tone too.
i have alot of time until this band actually starts doing somehting so i have a lot of time to consider other things too.
      thanks!

I think a custom would give more clarity than a DD.

It deffinatley has enough bass and output for metal anyway

i already got the custom but i'd like to check some other stuff out. especially for neck. i know it's either gonna be the custom or DD but for neck is the main problem im haiving.

Rob said a DD set might be good, i may just end up trying a bunch of stuff.

              thanks
