  • A question for everybody! (about PU)

    If I tell you:
    - Tight bass (for chunky rythm stuff)
    - Fat mids (a bit squishy)
    - Clear Treble (with some bite, not too much, not too few)

.... what model of PU come immediatly to your mind?

A clue: I am looking for a bridge PU, for mostly (but not only) high gain stuff (rythm and solo).

Hope this question will appeal you!

      That's how I woud describe a Distortion.

my distortion has mids. Sounds like that's what I'd recommend. Nice chunky sound too, highs very clean.

When I was writing the first post, I had a tone reference in mind: the Nuno Bettencourt's tone in Color Me Blind or Peace Maker Die (3 Sides to Every Story). I know Nuno was using a Bill Lawrence L-500L. But I did not want to quote Nuno's name to let you free to spontaneously give the PU that comes to your mind.

Now that you know I am looking for the Nuno's tone (yeah, Tone is mostly in fingers and amp, I know), would you suggest me the same PUs?

I would give the Bill Lawrence XL-500L a go. Washburn originally put these in the early incarnations of the N4 but have since put the L-500L's in which are very trebley.

I find the customs mids are not that squishy, but more cold and hard which I find anoying with overdrive but with med to high amounts of gain it rocks! Havent tried the others. The bass frequencies are tight, and there is a lot of bite in the trebles.

I'd say Distrotion...maybe a Custom, a Custom has less mids and more bass...a Custom is like a loud ass PAF type sound, I think that the Distortion is more what you're looking for, but both would be good.

What I love in the Nuno's tone, it is that it has buttery mids, chunky low and great clarity in high register. I owned a Duncan CC which has buttery/fat mids, but neither bottom end , nor high end.
I was thinking about the DM AirZone too: fat mids, chunky low... I hope the high end is not too bad (pinch harmonics are harder to come with dark PU)...
