    is it normal when a humbucker is split for it to hum?(like a single coil)

    Yes it is. When you split a humbucker you are only using a single coil of the pickup.

        I guess you would have to try shielding it like you would with a Strat single coil, except do it to a humbucker.

          NO. BUt it IS possible to wire to coils in parallel to get a "single coilish" tone without the hum
