What pickups in Agathis body?

Re: What pickups in Agathis body?

Interesting thread. My kids have a cool little Ibby GiO; Gibson scale, 2 humbuckers, stop tail, rosewood over maple neck. Reminds me of an old '60s double-cut Melody Maker I had years ago.

After reading this, I will in the future remember not to beat my head against the wall too hard, nor spend too much money trying to find pickups to make it sound good. Although, a couple used Phat Cats (or similar GFS') might be worth a try...

Good info, fellow forum dudes. It's amazing the esoteris stuff we can learn around here.

Re: What pickups in Agathis body?

Dammit, Frank, now I'll have to try the P-Rails in my Tele as well! :) I already owe a small fortune from swapping pickups ...

The description of Agathis lacking sparkle is spot on, compared to my Epi LP for sure. It sounds good and really good in a band setting. I wouldn't use it for recording, if I had an alternative.

I have two Squier Vintage Modified Tele Customs, both Agathis with Maple necks. There are similarities in their sound, but if ever there was an example of how two guitars made exactly the same way with (supposedly) the same materials can sound very different, this is it. One is well balanced in weight, the other is so body-heavy that it's hard to sit with it without it falling off my leg. The only other difference is that one neck has a slightly thicker headstock - seems to make the neck shape seem a little thicker at the top as well before coming to the modern C-shape in the middle and bottom. The other is C-shape the whole way.

The acoustically better sounding guitar is the body-heavy one with the C-shape neck. That guitar sounds amazing with the Hot P90s. I had 59s in there before and they were nice but too compressed. By contrast, the 59s sounded perfect in the other Tele.

In the neck I've liked: PAF Pro, Custom 5 (best shred pickup in this position ever), Air Norton, Alnico II Pro neck, Pearly Gates neck, Invader neck, C5/59, 59, and Hot P90 neck.

In the bridge: Custom Custom, Custom 5, Double Whammy, 59, and Hot P90 bridge.

If you didn't like the 59, from the pickups I've tried, I would suggest the Custom Custom or Double Whammy. The Custom Custom was surprisingly deep - depends on the amp as well, of course. The Double Whammy is very full in the mids and tight in the bottom end. I had the Custom 5 in the neck at the same time I tried the DW and it really exaggerated the Custom 5's mid-cut.

Someone suggested an AirZone. I like the AirZone, and also tried the ToneZone and a Super Distortion. All pickups I really like, but my Teles can produce a decent amount of bass, albeit not very articulate. So, the looser bass of those pickups probably won't do you any favours. The Double Whammy is a better choice in this respect.

Advice that Frank gave a while back about Agathis that really made sense and helped me keep my focus was to stay away from low output pickups. Seth Lover pickups were awesome in my LP but blew chunks in my Tele. That's why the above pickups I liked are all medium to high output.

Re: What pickups in Agathis body?

This seems to be pretty well covered but fwiw I have a Squire Custom II body with p-rails and triple shots. I'm pretty sure the body is agathis. Rail positions not so good. Humbuckers, eh, OK. P90 I like a lot. Sometime down the road I'll probably put the p-rails in an Epi dot or some other 335 clone and some good P90's in the Squire.
I also have a Squire Strat Standard (agathis) with a lil' 59 b, a no-name Squire mid and a Vintage rail neck. I get twang , quack and some nice blues tones from this setup. Took a lot of height adjustments to achieve and I'll probably never change anything on this one.

Re: What pickups in Agathis body?

ok, it seems that P90s are the most appreciate on agathis, I'll have a look on some humbucker sized one.
thank you

Re: What pickups in Agathis body?

FWIW, I did try Phat Cats in my Tele and liked them. I thought the neck was nice although the bridge was lacking a little in oomph, for my tastes. When I tried the real P90s there was no contest. I think the Phat Cats are great for what they are meant to be, which is a P90 in humbucker format. Just don't expect them to be exactly like a P90. Not trying to be a P90 snob or anything - I never thought I'd have a guitar with them, but after trying them there's no doubt they are special.

I have 500K pots, and thought maybe the bridge Phat Cat could have benefited from 250K, or a mag swap. I didn't know about mag swapping when I tried the Phat Cats. I'm sure you can find many posts on here regarding swapping magnets in a P90/Phat Cat, if the Phat Cats (or other mfgr's P90-in-a-HB) don't fit the bill.

Good luck. And let us know what you end up using and how that works for you.

Re: What pickups in Agathis body?

Hey guys, I hope nobody minds if I bump an old thread, cuz I'm basically gonna ask the same thing.

I have an LTD Viper-10 (one of those beginner starter pack guitars) that I feel like upgrading. Here are some specs that I dug up online:

- Agathis Body Material (I know in the newer models they use basswood, but I got mine circa 2006 so I'm sorta sure mine is agathis)
- Maple Thin-U Bolt-on Neck
- 24 Fret, Rosewood Fingerboard
- Two ESP LH-100 Humbuckers
- Tune O Matic Bridge and Tailpiece

I'm looking to play heavier music with this axe, stuff like Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch Engage, BMTH etc. I don't think the current pickups on it are hot enough to cut it.

Before you tell me that I'm better off with a new guitar though, I do have one. It's just this was my first electric guitar which i've had for 8 years and it has a lot of sentimental value, played a lot of gigs with it before and I figure I'm not gonna get much selling it off anyway.

Any advice would be helpful! Cheers

Re: What pickups in Agathis body?

I have an agathis bodied RG-120 that was too bright with the stock pups. I put an Alternative 8 in the bridge along with a Distortion neck with an RCA4. I think it now sounds good to say the least. I can only imagine what it would sound like if I could get an Ibby body with different wood.

Are the stock pickups bright or muddy? I've had agathis bodies that were like mahogany and benefited from brighter pickups, and I had one body that was like maple and stabbed me in the ears with a few different pickups. :D

They're a little on the muddier side. The neck pup definitely is.

Re: What pickups in Agathis body?

Custom in the bridge, 59, Jazz, or Full Shred N in the neck. If the neck pickup is still a little muddy, wire it in parallel.
