  • SORRY, need some advise here with a new band....

    Hi guys....just started a new 90s cover band...mostly 90s rock, hard rock and grunge. Using my 1994 PRS CE-22 a lot. The Dragon bridge is a nice sounding pickup but a bit too hot for my needs now. I like that it is creamy, dark and smooth....but it hits my PWE Event Horizon too hard. I tried the Rio BBQ which I love but it lacks the smoothness of the Dragon. I thinking of trying the CC again. I tried before but thought it lacked the low end of the Dragon bridge which is 19K. I also need to flip the magnet. Any suggestions?

    I am also thinking of the Dimarzio air Zone? what about that one?

    Looking for solid split tones as well.

    say you like the dragon but its too hot

    would it sound ok at maybe 14k?

    try this

    you want 14k
    14 x 4 = 56
    subtract the dragon at 19k
    56 - 19 = 37
    find a resistor in the 37k range
    put it in parallel with your dragon
    attach one leg of the resistor to the pickup's hot wire
    and the other to ground

    you now have a dragon that won't hit the amp so hard
    tone doesn't change
    and your split coil sounds exactly the same

    if its better but still to hot
    then try a smaller resistor
    using the math above

        How is that not going to change the tone? Putting a 37k resistor in parallel with the pickup also puts it in parallel with the volume pot, effectively giving him a 34k volume pot.

        Further, 19k+37k parallel doesn't equal 14k, it equals approx 12.6k. He'd want a 56k resistor parallel with his 19k Dragon to get around 14k.

              Just do this? "attach one leg of the resistor to the pickup's hot wire
              and the other to ground"

                  I showed my math
                  if you want to sharpshoot it
                  then show yours

                    Yep. The total resistance with a parallel circuit is always going to be less than the smallest resistor.

                    Rt = 1/ ((1/R1) + (1/R2)...)

                    The less resistance you have the more treble is going to bleed to ground. Methinks this experiment could make the pickup go from dark to "really, really dark".

                    I'm surprised that that Rio Grande BBQ didn't work for you. I used to have one of those in a Hamer Special FM and that was the darkest and smoothest pickup I've ever tried.

                        Try lowering the pickup.

                          LOwering the pickup just made it muddy. Lowering the volume knob works best.

                            It should be the opposite. Lowering the pickup should remove mud/thickness, and lowering the on-board volume should remove high end.
