    LOL!!!
    If you just read a post by The Guy Who Invented Fire please understand that opinions change, mind sets change and as players our ears mature...not to mention our needs grow and change. With that in mind, today I may or may not agree with the post you just read!

      Seths are more microphonic than potted pickups. If you tap the pickup with your finger you hear the tap louder through the amp than you do with a potted one. Still love 'em though!

      Fom a post by Bill Lawrence on another site: "The Alnico magnets under the coils of a traditional humbucker cause, due to their permeability, an imbalance of the humbucking effect resulting in some hum."

        I remember a thread someone changes the magnets on a custom (5) and got
        more noise.

        i have to think about this a bit,
        But that was what i thought first: it has to do something with the permeability.
        Its a function of the outer magnetc field in ferromagneticas?!

          I think i've got a theory about this. If someone's interested?
          I just have to know if this is right:
          Ceramic magnets are "harder" (magnetically) than Alnico?!
          Can somone verify this?

            alnicos are made of metal, ceramics are not

              I wont believe it until someone shows up with a SCIENTIFIC explanation. Sorry.

              I don't buy it either. It doesnt seem logical.
              Gravity...its just a theory

                Awww, does that mean Seths aren't good for hi-gain due to noise?

                  it is more noticable on electrically noisy environment.a2s are only slightly noisier than the a5s. but both are very noticeably noisier than HBs with ceramics. try it yourself, put an a2 HB in one position and a ceramic HB on the other, the diff. in noise levels is very obvious when you flick the switch. it seems the weaker the magnet the noisier the pickup

                    Re: seth seems more noisey than my other hummers

                    ok i'll try to explain: why weaker magnets hum more then stronger
                    But it's just my theory

                    The noise from the windings is cancelled in first order of the humbucking effect. But if you have an electromagnetical field E (electrical field) and
                    H (magnetically) field are changning with time.
                    The changing of H causes a changing of B:
                    B=µ0 (H + M)
                    The changing of B causes a "voltage":
                    U = - d/dt (int_A B * dA) ~ A * d/dt B *edit* I think this is called Faraday's Law
                    But now the interesting part: the Magnetization M changes when the outer magnetfield changes. You can see this in the hysteris curve.
                    On "harder" magnets the hystersis is "flatter" at the region where H ~ 0.
                    What i mean M changes less when H changes less on "harder" magnets
                    => B changes less => U changes less.
                    That means the voltage which causes the hum is less => less hum on harder magnets.

                    At the bottom you see the Magnetization M as a function of the Magntical Field H:
                    The Area in the curve is bigger the strong or harder (dunno how it's called) the magnet is. On very strong magnets it is like a square. That means the magnetization nearly
                    change in a magneticfield. On "softer" or wekaer magnets the curve is more round.
                    The magnetization does change in a magnetfield.

                    To sum it up: the Alnico 2 is softer than Alnico 5 and the Magnetization
                    changes more in a electromagnetical field which implicates a higher voltage which is inducated.

                    Sorry for my bad english! It's just a theory. You need the datas of the magnets to prove this....
                    Hope somebody understand a little bit...

                      that's why slash always has a hush noise reduction in his set-ups.
