  • 498t magnet?

I just opened up my Gibson 498t (2 conductor) to see if I could convert it to a 4 wire pick-up for parallel wiring options.

When I pulled out the magnet, it appears black!
it's silver on the sides, but the top and bottom is clearly black- CERAMIC instead of an A5?!
the 498t is suppose to have an A5 (it's suppose to be the A5 version of the 500t if I'm not mistaken).

I'm pretty sure Duncans mags are-
    A5- silver/w black marker lines
    A2- silver w/blue marker lines
    Ceramic- black (or dark grey?)

does Gibson use similar coding with their mags?
it also has two wood spacers and the screw coil has a metal spacer through the screws.

    BONUS Question-

each coil has a black and white wire coming out of them-
the black wire from the screw coil is clearly grounded (soldered to the base plate)-
Does anybody know which wires to connect to wire the pick-up in parallel?

I've been taking Dmzs and Duncans apart for a while now-
I feel like I'm in a strange land with this Gibson

    Re: 498t magnet?

It's an A5, ceramics won't have any "silver" appearance to them anywhere.

As for re-wiring, desolder and remove the 2 conductor wire (be really careful, Gibson lead wires are easier to accidentally pull out of the coil than Duncans), and wire like this:

    slug black-black
    slug white-white
    screw black-green
    screw white-red
bare wire solder to the baseplate

This will then wire up just like a Duncan.

I don't know anything about the magnet, but I can help you with the coil leads. You can reverse engineer it based on what was hooked up to the pickup's leads

      - The one connected to ground would be green on a Duncan.

      - The one connected to the hot lead would be black on a Duncan.

      - The other lead on the coil that produced the hot lead would be white on a Duncan.

      - The other lead on the coil that was grounded would be red on a Duncan.

If you want to wire this pickup in parallel, you'd connect green and white to ground, and red and black to the rest of the circuit.
