  • Seth,PAF,JB-SH-4, VICTORY!!!!

    HI
    To eveyrone,
it worked, I now have Seth Lover that sounds exactly like my old PAF, and, it sounds a little punchier, with a touch more sparkle. For me, it sounds better than any other pick up. I gotta rest, this machine keeps going blank.
I'll try one more time then I gotta rest.
To Lt.Kojack PAF=7.5 Seth with A5=7.9. gotta rest for now,
    steve

        Re: Seth,PAF,JB-SH-4, VICTORY!!!!

        Yes,
The A5 into the Seth changed everything. The general trend in the "frustrated" thread was to change the magnet.
Forgive me, I was up most of last knight finishing up so I could get that reading for the good Lt.; finish the fretboard, the reading had to be on this guitar. The one I pretty much built. So I am still fairly sleep deprived.
I had to get everything ready for the pain specialist also today. Not to mention the general hub-bub around the election. The Doc makes me fill out a daily report for his office and for the government.
The JB. was physically hard to take apart, where the Seth came apart almost by itself. The JB may have been potted, but it had been coverless for months. Who knows, I am too tired to care.
But the main thing is without the collective "you guys" I might not have gone for mag swap. That seemed like a
tail chaser for sure. But it was perfect from the first note. Whether I use my long fingernails or one of my "self made" SB picks. Pretty much a 1.0 triangle pick from gib., fend., clayton, I run the pick "string side" on something rough-150 sandpaper, city sidewalks, cheesgraters, so I get that rough click just before the string sounds, now it seems to do it without all that extra stuff. Again, like Bloomfield or high gain players such as Jim McCarty from cactus, etc.
So I wanted to thank all of you. This is the sound I have been hearing in my head for 40 years.
        Steve Buffington.

          Hi,
Sorry, I just re-read my opening post and it makes no sense without context. To all who missed the stuff in the "Seth-Lover, PAF, JB SH-4 Frustrated" Post. I was trying to match my PAF. It is a very long thread, easy to look for on this day, or the last couple of days. Very good material from some of the smartest guys in the forum.
The numbers were for Lt.Kojak who wanted a reading from the PAF I was trying to duplicate and the Seth-Lover I had. He said he had the specs he needed for a S.Lover but I thought I may as well add some small bit of info for whoever might want it as it now had an A5 mag in it instead of an A2 mag.
          Thanks,
          Steve B.

Yes, I find the Seths a great match for A5; they are very mid-heavy with A2, the A5 gives them so much wider/flatter frequency response. Unfortunately, you lose that thick, chewy feel that A2 gives it, but you pick your poison. Glad it worked for you.

I think that PAFs went to standardized Alnico V in 1967, so A5 was the proper solution. I'm glad the OP got some good advice here.

                Yes,
absolutely great advice. Pickup of my dreams. Gotta find out if it comes in a T.Bucker size
                thanks,

I just wonder how would you like it if you throwed there an A4 instead of A5, because, this is the mag I really love for PAFs!.

                    Re: Seth,PAF,JB-SH-4, VICTORY!!!!

                    To hermetico,
I did call about A5 and A4's, But it seems like some folks are closed for the election. I am going for 2 more Seths where 1 will be using an A5, and the other will be an A4. Now I need to see if they would charge for a trembucker
Seth Lover. I doubt they do, as a custom Seth sounds expensive.
Still, I could use a Seth with a trembucker as I have an A5 mag from my JB trembucker and all the folks on this forum said that the magnet strength extends beyond the phisical limits of the pickup, so I could bend the "legs" of the pickup a little toward the higher strings, thus making, if anything, a very well rounded sound as the bass strings are always (mostly) louder anyway.
                    Steve

                      Glad this is over!

Seths can be had as Trembuckers but they come with out a cover and I don't believe they are as period correct as a standard Seth Lover.

Maybe as a Custom Shop order.

It's NOT listed in the website... are you 100% sure?

Sure, maybe it is but it's the same cost as a plain old Seth Lover so how or why does it matter??

The best part is since Mike is such a big Duncan dealer and often stocks FSC pickups (trem spaced Seth Lovers, 4 wire 59's, single conductor Pearly Gates, etc there is no wait other than shipping form Mike to you.
