  • stacking magnets in a double thick enviroment

got some questions about stacking two alnico 8 magnets in a detonator which stock, has a double thick ceramic.

    1. will it slowly un-magnetize the magnets being on top of each other?
    2. if it is ok to stack them, will it still sound like the typical single alnico 8 sound, or will two increase the pull and make it weird sounding?

Re: stacking magnets in a double thick enviroment

i seen this post on another forum

Hi guys! I have a bunch of pickups, and I like them all, each with its different character. But I have a pair of old Gibsons that seem to sound weak. They test a bit around 8K and look unmolested. My guess (and my guitar tech's) is that the magnet has lost its charge. I don't want to swap...

will this apply to what im talking about?

stacking them ive found does seem to weaken the field in some way, i can tell by the strength it takes to pull them off the side of the fridge.
when there stacked its makes it alot easier to take them off compared to just one.
so im assuming this would affect the tonal aspect within the pickup as well. i was hoping this would work.

Yes stacking is all wrong. If they're attracting together it means that you have north-to-south and south-to-north. This is actually creating a magnetic circuit with a more closed return path. It's counterproductive. If there were a way that represents the orientation of a true double-thick magnet, you'd have to push them together in the direction that is really difficult to put together. It can help to do this while in a pickup where the magnet can touch the poles and use it's magnetism to pull closer to the poles, but it's not a stable nor recommended application IMO.

Just make a spacer of some sort to install under the magnet. I have an A8 deto made like this, it's great. I used some mdf type fiber board for the spacer.
