  • Duncan Distortion Problem

I recently installed a Sh-6 Distortion in my Jackson. It sounds great but it has like some jangly single coil sounds to it. I don't know if its a bad coil in the pick or that's just how it comes. Please help!!

as much as i want to like the DD, even OLA and Keith have showed that jangle doesnt go away no matter who is using it.

You are describing the normal sound of the Distortion, but using some different words than we're used to hearing. I personally love the Distortion pup, but NOT with the thick ceramic magnet. I've tried using an A5, UOA5, A8, and A2 in it and absolutely LOVE the tone and the dynamics of the Dist. with the A2 magnet.

The Dist8 is similar to the stock Dist but with a smoother high end...not so "jangly" or brittle. The Dist5 is bright and mid-scooped and sounds pretty good, but right now I'm on a mids kick so it doesn't quite make it for me.

If you want it smoother sounding (especially in the highs), more mids, and more dynamic, try the Dist with an A2.

One option is to turn the treble down on the amp. I believe there is a knob for that...

Yeh, but that ceramic mag still gives it a brittle sounding high end. Just EQing out some treble doesn't get rid of that.

how does the bass and treble change you think?

What youre describing is more or less normal for a DD. The Parallel Axis Distortion (PATB-2 if memory serves) has a very similar tonal profile but is overall somewhat darker, I personally prefer it for exactly that reason

I think the jangle is great. Like you said, it sounds like a single coil, but big, fat and distorted...with out all the noise. That's what I love about it.
You might try a JB8. JB's are always for sale. I have a JB8 in my LTD ec1000 and it's brutal sounding. It has some characteristics of a DD but a little smoother sounding, but I'm partial to the JB sound.
Also I think surface54 can account for the JB8. I know he has a few YouTube vids demonstrating it.

                    JB8

i should of never got rid of the JB8 cause its probably one of the best recorded sounds ive had.
sure the C8 was good, Detonator 8 & 5 are deadly. but the JB8 was king fn kong.
when you get so wrapped up in pickup swapping theres a good chance you will get rid of your best sound in pursuit of hearing something else.
now thats its already gone i have to move on or buy another...im in saving money mode so deto5 is my thang now.
