  • Spin a Split question. Coil not completely "off".

Hello. I've installed spin-a-splits on 2 separate guitars. Sounds great. However, I'm not sure how dramatic the effect would be on the sound but I'm just curious why, when the spin-a-split pot is on 0 I'm still getting a small amount of output from the coil that is supposed to be "dead". Is this normal?

Would this also be the case is a toggle switch or push/pull were used?

The only way you'd still get output from the "off" coil is if the pot doesn't go completely to zero ohms when its turned down. Ie., it isn't taking the red/white wire totally to ground. The other thing would be if the ground connection itself wasn't good. If you have a meter, just measure ohms between the red/white connection and ground, and see if it truly goes to zero ohms when turned down.

The other thing I would question is, how are you determining that it isn't completely off? Can you really tell by ear, or are you "tapping" on the dead coil? If tapping, you may simply be hitting it hard enough to generate a signal in the "other" coil.
