  • OU812 Tone

So what's the best pickup for Eddie's tone on OU812? Alder body strat.

Back in the day I had really good luck with the Custom Custom and a chorus pedal.

I was thinking CC as well, but it really sounds like he is using a lower output pickup.

poplar guitar with a JB. the rest is in the fx and the amp.

But technically speaking, the guitars being made for him at that time were basswood. Even if you had the same rig, you'd still need his fingers.

In the studio recordings I hear a lot of single coil neck pickup and split bridge tones too... A 4 conductor JB will get you there but you'll need a good noiseless stacked neck tone too.
Best amp tech I've ever had and hands down one of the best electronic/sound wizards in the NC Piedmont.

the tone to me is waaaay too smooth for a JB. I can get some pretty good VH with my alder body, Floyd rose, CC equipped charvel into my marshall

Custom Custom, a chorus that has a delay knob (wide delay in chorus) and ANOTHER delay. Key to the 5150/OU812 era. Not too much distortion.

Lower output pickup and some Greenbacks cranked.

Definitely need a pitch shift device ie. Chorus, Harmonizer, Detune etc.... Eddie was into using the Lexicon, Eventide devices of the time during that recording

I have a custom custom in an alder superstrat and I get good 1984-5150-OU812 tones. The Frankenstein humbucker is great too but it costs twice as much.
