  • What are your favorite/tried and true pickup combinations?

I'm sure there are literally dozens of thread on this same thing but I thought I woul take a current concensus...over the years I have come to have a few favorites of my own, although I have never ventured into "Boutique" Builder land...

Single Coils - DiMarzio SDS-1...just got a gritty sound that very easily translates to SRV, Hendrix and well beyond.

Humbuckers - Gibson (Bill Lawrence) "The Original" HB-R/HB/L Sets...hot Gibson tone at its finest IMHO.

Mixed: Seymour Duncan APS-1 Neck/Pearly Gates F Bridge or DiMarzio SDS-1 Neck/Tone Zone F Bridge

    1983 Kramer Pacer Imperial
    1983 Kramer Pacer Deluxe
    1988 Kramer Nightswan
    1989 Charvel Sambora
    2016 Warmoth Hellacaster
Boogie Private Reserve Lone Star Combo
    Rivera Hundred Duo Twelve

used to be 59/custom. now its 59/jazz hybrid A4 neck and custom 8 in the bridge. Most versatile combo ive played. I like jazz/distortion also

I'm going to sound like a Seymour fanboi. Can't help it.

JB/Jazz. What's not to like. Clean, articulate, responsive to your fingers. Whether they be "originals", or Duncan Designed. They sound great to me.
Duncan Distortion set. Same as above, but with "attitude".
For a Tele: Jerry Donahue bridge with a 59 neck. 'Nuff said.

sixty-nine style sss strat single-coils. Alliteration... Occasionally I'll bust out a Jazz and 59/custom hybrid if I need it. But I'm designing a guitar with my buddy and it's going to have 2 hotter stacked strat pickups in the neck and middle and a custom shop duncan in the bridge and we're going to wire a pot to split them all. So we can get some pretty authentic strat tones and some killer rock/metal cut. Plus dumping gain on a noiseless strat neck pickup is awesome for legato an sweeps. But GENERALLY my favorite is a PJ set up for bass.

For HB, I love Alnico II Pro/Custom Custom set. For SCs, I like the Classic Stack Plus sets.

APS1 single coils with a Twangbanger Bridge in an ash strat. Perfection.

Seth lover neck. any low wind strat pickup, and the jerry donahue bridge.

Seth lover - cover + A3 = win. Just swapped out the magnet today, and wow. Really really good sounds - split it's closer to a true single coil. Parallel is very tele-neck-ish. You can cover lots of ground with that one.

                      JB bridge

No particular brand but I love Broadcaster-ish tele bridge pickup with P-90 in the neck. Dynamic duo.

When in doubt, I'd never have an issue with this set for most anything.
