  • A little help?

    Hey all,

    I need a little help.

I have a custom Fender double neck (71 Jazz bass/70 Strat)
The body is Alder (aged 20yrs).
The Strat has DiMarzio Breed and Tone zone.
It basically sounds like a Strat on roids....Great for when I need a different sound.
(I'll post the pic as soon as I can figure out how to do that...LOL)

I have an old Ibanez RG270DX, basswood body, Wizard ll neck and
some kind of Seymour Duncans that give me a great sound, but they're a little thin sounding.

    Currently:
I write from hard rock to technical metal.
I use everything from classical, blues and jazz in my writing.

Try to think; (early~mid) Rush, King Crimson, Black Sabbath meets King Diamond,
(early) Voi Vod, Watchtower, (early) Metallica, MegaDeath and a bit of Yngwie.

I use various pedals and/or a POD run through a fairly good tube preamp and record direct.
Not my first choice to do it this way, but my studio isn't soundproofed yet and
I don't want any outside sounds to come through when recording.
I will eventually be running through a Mesa Boogie Mark V combo and a 410 Mesa bin.

I'm currently looking for a good pup set up for my Ibanez RG470FM.
Mahogany body with a maple top.
It has Infinity pups and they aren't very good IMO.
They sound a bit flat and have almost no sustain compared to my Strat and older Ibanez.

I'm looking for a good all around pup that'll pick up pinched squeals and harmonics better than the infinity's
with better sustain and have an agressive sound for power rhythms as well as
rhythms that often use articulate voicings that need to sound out clearly, yet still be great for metal.

I'm primarily a bassist who can play guitar.
I have very limited knowledge when it comes to guitar set ups and wood.
I'm only familiar with Alder, Maple and Basswood bodys.
This is my first Mahogany body with a Maple top, so I really need help here.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    Thanks for reading.
