  • Let's talk neck hybrids

Haven't seen much since the 6 string sentient came out. Anyone building their own versions?

I have a jazz neck, should I use the 59 neck or will the 59 bridge give it a better mismatch and more texture? Anyone try a jazz bridge and 59 neck? Or jazz & 59 bridge together? What magnet?

Screamin Demon and Seth Lover Hybrid (Demon Lover) is a great neck pickup I hear.

I have experimented extensively with a Jazz N/59 B hybrid.

Basically, it is a highly versatile pickup. It worked well in either position, with any magnet. I've gone so far as a triple ceramic with it and it became a tight, powerhouse with articulation and dynamic range. But it is best with an A2 or A3 in the neck spot. Here I think the nuances of it's voice are expressed more clearly.

        Im using this set.
        A5 magnets

Neck: screw aph or jazz bridge coil
        Neck: slug 59 neck coil

        Hendrix single coil vibe

Bridge: jazz or aph screw bridge coil.
Bridge: Seymorizer 2 or distortion Neck slug coil.

Absolute favorite Neck with nickel cover is aph/jazz neck with slugs removed A2 magnet.

I'd highly recommend pairing the Jazz N with the '59 B.

My efforts with hybrids have focused on the neck slot, as I don't like thick, warm, muddy tones from there. You don't need a big difference between coils to thin out the mids and add a sharper high end. I take a mid to high 7K neck coil and pair it with a low to mid 8K bridge coil, like an 3.8K and a 4.2K. I've mixed and matched with Seth's, '59's, A2P's, Jazz's etc: Seth B and Seth N, or Seth B and '59N. When there's a mismatch of coils .4K+ you can use a warm magnet, like A2 and UOA5 (for the richer textures) and still have a sharp high end. If the mismatch is .2K or less, you'll need a brighter magnet to achieve that.

After hearing the benefits of mismatched coils, I've converted all of my neck HB's to that, either thru hybrids or spin-a-split. Why have matched coils in the neck slot, and lose a chunk of treble and boost the mids? I want that in bridge, not the neck.

"Wait, I know! Blueman and Lew can arm wrestle, and the winner gets to decide if 250K pots sound good or not."

That's strange. I've heard people say that the APH and the Jazz have the same winding.

              They are.
Its meant as full pickup of either for those who dont know that they are the same.

So jazz a2 neck without slugs
Or a aph neck without slugs.

              Best neck pickup for LP

Sorry' I should have had a good reason in my post . But this samsung with broken screen kills my fingers
For les paul guitars that often suffers from boomy bass.
                    Medium gain usage
                    59n to boomy
                    Jazz to sterile
                    Aph cool
Aph with no slugs = strat style tone boosted but dead quiet.
Like the best of the aph tone is magnified.

That's an interesting combo, aren't the winds on those very similar?

I have been trying to track down a pearly gates bridge to mix with my screaming demon and make the heaven & hell hybrid or maybe a 490r with the demon.

I made my own Jazz/59 quite a while back now, from neck position pups, stock A5. Like it a lot in my old Ibanez Roadstar. Had a Jazz in there before which was also good, but this is a tad warmer and more harmonically rich, not to mention the fact that these things stay clear under gain when playing open chords etc.
