pearly gate recommendations

Recently bought a guitar with a pearly gate in the bridge. i set the bottom string to a distance of an eighth of an inch and the top tp a sixteenth as everyone seems to recomend. the problem is that it sounds weak and distant. so my question is, if I'm going to experiment with raising it, what is the threshold i shouldnt pass? If there are any gate users what is your experince? I play heavy mostly

Just play with the pickup height until it sounds good to your ear. No one can predict or correctly anticipate where a pickup will sound good according to a predetermined height. If you play heavy it may be that the PB is not the right pickup for you at any height.

It initially woeked well for geavy styles, that's not necessarily the problem. it had buzz and palm mute issues in its inital place. ill just experiment like you suggested
