Seymour Duncan Alpha/Omega

Re: Seymour Duncan Alpha/Omega

I can't imagine they'd be really high output. Based on some videos of the band, they insist on clarity and tightness under high gain. So, the pickups are probably on the lower end of the high output range, both with ceramic mags (if I recall correctly from the video). Maybe Evan could give us a hand with what the EQ and output levels look like?

I talked to SD themselves, and they said they're pretty high output (though they said the same thing about the Nazgul, which I've heard can clean up pretty well). I currently have Blackouts in both of my guitars and am looking for something that does metal very well still, but has better clarity, note separation, and versatility in terms of style of music that they can handle.

Re: Seymour Duncan Alpha/Omega

I've watched that vid a few more times and they really do sound awesome.

I really want to hear them straight into a 5150 or something, boost on/off OK, but straight into an amp.

Are these going to be available outside of the sig guitar? And did I just see something about Ola is getting sig pickups too?

Duncan said they're probably going to do a limited run out of their custom shop, though they may do more in the future. I haven't seen anything about Ola sigs, but those would be awesome.

Re: Seymour Duncan Alpha/Omega

I actually like that guitar tone, but there is almost nothing that the pickups are contributing. You could probably do that with a V7/V8 set through the same rig.

I kinda hate that style of riffing and, yeah, pretty much that band too.

I own an RGD with the V87/V77 set. I have played a few of the Mark Holcomb sig guitars. Those Alpha/Omega pickups have more attack and clarity than the V87/V77 set. The treble end on the bridge reminds me of the EMG 81x (note the X, it does not have the fizz of the older 81). The dynamics are great overall. The neck is a good combination of "glass" and "warmth" as Mark describes in the video he released with Keith Merrow. The only other ceramic mag pickups that I know of that Duncan makes for the neck are the Distortion neck and Invader neck. The Alpha sounds drastically different than either of those.

I totally want to get a set of those pickups in a seven string version. They flat out sound amazing!

The PRS Holcomb is an awesome guitar overall too though.. :D

Re: Seymour Duncan Alpha/Omega

Holcomb models are starting to surface.....can't wait to get mine! I will definitely review the pickups once I give the guitar some serious playtime.
Interesting that you made the 81x comment. I can totally hear some of that in the pickups. The aggressiveness of these really reminds meringue Nazgul in a way as well.
