I have a normally wound single coil (APS-2 alnico ii pro flat strat) for the middle and will split the humbuckers to get all the 'strat' tones out of this guitar (in addition to the HB tones). The coils that are FURTHEST from the SC are the ones that lie in the same positions as the strat pickups so those are the ones I want in the split tones. I think... to get hum-cancelling, I will need to split to the screw coils. So the guitar will look normal (screws outside), but I think the wiring is going backwards which means the aps-2 should also be wired backwards. I suppose I should just stare at the wire color diagrams and then get it wrong a few times... but and experience would help.
