Hi, at the time I'm thinking about a custom guitar. It would be a VIP carved hollowbody from warmoth.com, probably with mahogany and flame maple top.

I will use it mainly for jazz. I have a great strat, but I want a guitar that's quite different, especially with a nice jazz and modern jazz/slightly distorted fusion sound. At the same time, I want a versatile guitar that also works with heavier rock - even metal, though zeppelin style is probably what kind of sound I also want.

I've been thinking about Jazz model in Neck and Custom Custom in bridge. would that fit?

Also, what kind of configuration should I get to get the most out of the humbuckers? I've only used single coils on my guitars, but I want as many possibilities as I can get..

the Jazz model is too bright for jazz, it is mis-named badly. Try the APH2, and the CC...
the problem, is that lots of people buy the Jazz pickup to play jazz on, and are disappointed...I know about 6 people who did that (at least SD has the return policy).

Go with a 59 in the neck you'll be happy!

thanks alot, so you think I should stay away from the jazz model pups. I've heard great things abous the seth lover... for the neck pickup, would you suggest 59', seth lover, JB or A2P? the sound I'm mainly after is a warm jazztone, and not too much early les paul. Don't misunderstand, but as I'll order a hollow VIP body I'm more after the sound coming from ES-175 and ES-135.. of course, that's big hollowbody and if I have to compromise I understand that.

Concerning pickup routing and switching, what would you suggest here?

If it's a semi-hollow, I don't think you can go wrong with a set of Seths. Antiquity HBs would be great, too. I assume the A2P would be similar if you don't want a cover on the pickup. I would not use a JB in the neck. Can't help you with the 59 other than hearsay.

i would recommend a set of seths ... but order them from the custom shop with 4 wires ... if you dont want the custom shop price tag, i bet you'd like a set of AIIPs very well ...

i would recommend that you use a 5 way P-type mega switch (or similar rotary switch) for the "prs" combinations ... this will give you very nice versatility

Thanks again for your answers. I have antiquy SC in neck in my strat, and I love that sound. Would a set of Seths give me that much versatility as say, Seth in neck and custom custom in bridge? I'm also thinking about bying a piezo wilkinson brigde from fishman - it's not that more expensive since I either way have to buy a bridge. Any opinions on piezo signal mixed with humbuckers? I'm going to London in a few weeks, so I will try to find guitars wich uses the humbuckers that's interesting, so I can get a better picture of it..

A set of Seths would probably do you pretty good. Can't go wrong with that.

The Jazz may be really mellowed by a semi-hollow guitar. I've played, on several occasions, a Schecter C1 A/E, a semi-hollow with a pair of Duncan Designed HB-102s (modelled after the JB/Jazz combo from what I've read). The HB102s reacted very well in the Schecter. The tone may have not been the ideal jazz tone, but it did have a full, warm tone to it that was very pleasing. It also has a piezzo on board that you can mix with the humbuckers. If you can find one, I recommend playing one to get an idea of the 2 humbucker semi-hollow with piezzo set up. It may not be the perfect jazz guitar, but it is a very versatile setup.

I have that same model guitar, and there is a JazzN and an A3 CC in there right now. For warm jazzy sound, the JazzN would be OK (you'll need to play with your tone knob), but I think an APH would be a better choice.

For the bridge, the CC is a good choice in that guitar. If you want to rock a little harder or want more definition in the bridge, a Custom might be a better choice. Actually, since ceramic magnets are hard to come by, it might be a better idea to order a Custom and an A2 magnet from Torres engineering, just in case you want to change the Custom to a CC.

Thanks again, I'm learning a lot from your answers, although I know I have to try it out myself to hear what fits me. Although I play a lot of jazz, I don't neccesarily need a typical, very authentic jazz tone, but it's got to be warm and full. With the piezo I think I can get a very versatile clean sound. As I probably will use it mono, I'm a little curious if you get any interesting results playing with a distorted amp on the piezo? I'll route it so I can blend it of course, just curious.

By the way, I was thinking having all hardware in chrome finish. Can I put a chrome cover on all humbucers from duncan, or how is this?

I've used the Jazz/Custom Custom combo before. To me it's a wonderful combo. The two pickups together sound sweet. I got lots of compliments on the tones.

or you might want to look at the jazz pickups duncan makes....beneditto look under products on the main SD page those might suit you.
