  • Hum/Grounding Situation??

Greetings again,, just picked up this 70's Orlando MIJ guitar that someone who knows less than me, messed with.... If you check the underbelly, you'll see where the grounds for each p/u go to those screws that hold the switch in place... I've circled the corresponding points of contact on the top picture. I'm not getting any signs of buzzes or hum of any kind, except for when I move my hand close to either p/u, & the closer I get, the louder the hum... dynamo hum... Even with both p/u's switched off, I get this noise that I probably wouldn't get with typical playing, but something's not right, & should I run a wire from those 2 p/u grounds to the ground at the controls?

    Many thnx~

those are just on/off switches for each pup? that seems like an odd way to ground things. id probably rewire it more conventionally. does it sound normal with no hum if your hands arent near the pups?

It looks like those switches have a metal base plate. A green wire is also soldered to the sw. base plate. If the other end of that green wire is soldered to a ground (back of vol pot), it should be ok. I'd check to make sure everything is grounded, including the bridge. It would also be a good idea to shield the pup cavity, control cavity, and back of pickguard.

Thanks, I think I'll follow Jeremy's advice & rewire it. The tone pot was offering no real taper, but was def attenuating the highs at clockwise as well as counter, so I just clipped it for now. Where would a find this olde-timey schematic for the 2 on/offs & the volume & & tone, or just treat it is any 2 p/u gtrh the wires coming off those switches are my hots, but then run wire to ground from the p/u's bare wires...? I think I got this, espec as I have a neat Harmony guitar with the same setup & works just fine.
thnx guys & be well~ Kenny
