Hard to go wrong with a Super D, and a PAF Pro at the neck was a good rec.
AT-1 bridge with a Super II neck would be another great combo.
Norton bridge/36th Anni neck is a step closer to vintage voicing and mdeium output.

Full disclosure - I'm not a metal player and there probably are newer models that'd do ultra high gain better...

Bright, articulate and moderate output could describe a lot of pickups, especially their more recent ones (Titan, D-activator, Illuminator, Transition, etc).

If you're not looking for anything too modern or colored sounding, try the Fred. It's all about harmonics. It's a fun pickup for playing lead, not so much for chugging.
