I recently installed a Firebird style pickup in the bridge of a bass and I notice the string balance is poor. The G string has very low volume, the D is very loud, and the E isn't as loud as the A. I know that the E and G strings are at the edge of the magnetic fields for the pickup so they will be weaker than those in the center. Also the G string doesn't have as much mass so there's less for the pickup to sense. However, I saw this diagram of a Firebird mini and it has a small steel plate over where the B string would be on a six string. What is it's purpose?
