now this was not intentional back then but it made the pickup have better clarity on the wound strings and gave the pu a more overall glassier, brighter tone.
these days dimarzio does it intentionally, for two reasons, the first is a method of winding one coil with say 43 gauge wire and the other with 44,at different amounts of winds,
this makes the pickup have more harmonic overtones, and i unique tone.
dimarzio has patented this as "dual resonace" design. many dimarzio's feature this design such as the tone zone, fred, norton, steves special, air zone, megadrive(which was the first one with DR) and many other dimarzio's
I hope this helps?

The humbucker was developed to cancel 60hz electrical noise that exists in the electrical enviroment... but, the design does not only cancel out hum... it suppresses frequency response and dynamics as well.
When the coils are imbalanced, less of the "humbucking" occurs and the pickup gains some of the qualites of a single coil pickup...
The Alnico 59/Custom HYBRID that we make here on the forum definitely has a bit of a P-90 vibe going on... ballsy, yet dynamic with great clarity on the wound strings and strength on the high strings...
Hope that helps!GMP Guitars RULE!
