    My first attempt at metal

    Ok its late at night here and I've had to record with amp all the way down and the mic all the way up..not exactly ideal but considering its my first metal-ish song I think it turned out all right. Doing it this way obviously did affect the tone and I couldn't get the perfect cut on some of the lead tracks without pushing the air through my cab..but anyways Here it is

    that was really cool man, awesome job.

    do you play in a band? if not you might want to look into downsizing your rig into one that is more practical for your location and recording needs. i live in the basement of a house and my 36 watt tube combo is pretty much as loud as i can get away with. sounds great live too (for metal)

      Well this rig used to be at my church since I play with the Praise and Worship groups and it just happens to be at home right now. I do have a smaller tube combo which is a little more realistic to have in this size of apartment but its out getting repaired at the moment...

      EDIT: I'd also have to find a way get get metal sound on my combo since it has no drive channel of its own...This project actually started out from trying to find real metal tones out of my Marshall MG...

        I listened to this last week but never had time to comment, so here I am.

        I really liked it. It's a little bit muffled, but that'lll be the way you recorded it. It doesn't really detract from the overall feel, and everything sits well enough in the mix.
        The lead parts work well, especially the multi tracked ones.

        I'd like to hear more of this actually, see how it progresses. You have the perfect idea at the end there, that little last chug before the finish. That would shape into a great riff to take the song somewhere a little bit different.

          I like the ideas ,the recording is not as good as it can be ,but the ideas are nice and your rythm is awesomely good. The lead lines are tasty ,and the tightness is perfect!
          You need more midds on your rythm tone ,and have to try some serious panning.

            Thanks for the feedback guys.

            I'm hoping to soon do run through this again in the next few days but we'll see how that turns out.

            Probably will experiment taking it into a more berserker atmosphere and bringing it back full circle..hmm where to start


            hey bbq do you mean panning the tracks left and right?? I've tried this but it always seems to come out off balance. Right now I just offset the two sides by different amounts of milliseconds to expand or shrink the stereosity (that a real word?) of the mix and that seems to at least give it a little more livelyness. Maybe I just need to learn the bass better so I can add that backbone to level it out in the background, I dunno.

              Bass would level that out, Kane. That's my experience anyways. I'd pan the bass and drums in the middle, and then the guitars to the side, and the vocalist a tad to one side [like +1 or 2] and up front.

                Reminds me of Pantera meets Chris Poland. Very tasty and the leads compliment nicely and don't sound like a wank fest... your bends are sweet too.. bluesy!

                  This is slightly off topic but I see that your from VA beach. Right now i'm in Norfolk attached to the MCFAUL. Is there any good guitar/music shops around here where I can look for some good oddities Like used pedals keyboards or anything else like that? I've only been here for a couple months so I only know of Guitar center and ALM Music....

                    Yes I men that. I Mostly play 2-3 or sometimes 4 rythm tracks and pan it. I pan the drums like a live drum too.
                    And yes ,Bass will level so many things. It's the most important instrument to reinforce the guitar tone!

                      Cool playing and riffs. The snare sounded loud as well as the drums in general to me - I'd like to hear the guitars more.
