  • Got a Samson C05 mic, clips uploaded! What you think?

I bought a condenser mic, recommended by my soundman.
I think it's really good. I have little experience miking stuff, yet I'm getting somewhere already with this one.

There's two clips there, one with Deep Purple's Highway Star and another with King's X - Dogman. I think they sound good.

The DP clip was done with my AllParts Strat, Marshall mode in the Cube 60. Mic was about a feet away.

The King's X clip was with my Squier, JB in the bridge. Mesa mode in the Cube 60, gain on zero! I need a colder humbucker I think, it's almost overdistorted. Mic to the grill in this one.

    What you guys think?

Line 6 M13 and plenty of stompboxes I rarely use!

After the honey moon, I can tell those tones aren't as good as I thought. The Strat tone is fine, but the heavier clip is definitely overdistorted, and it's a bit fizzy and flat maybe.
I need a 59 in the bridge of this one!

Still, massive room for improvement! I'm really happy with this setup now.

      Come on guys!

I might record again tomorrow some clips, I changed the strings on my Squier to a lighter set (9-46 from 10-49) and it's sounding brighter. Plus I lowered the JB a fair bit, it was higher than I thought. It's a bit muddy and definitely fizzy on that clip.

i like the sound of that mic VERY much. what is your signal chain for the mic ? is there a preamp ? board ? directly into the computer ? if so what programs were used ?

          Hey thanks!

Not much, Mic -> Mic input of a cheap mixer -> Sound card.
It's a phantom powered condenser mic, so it has a preamp in the board.
I recorded with Cool Edit Pro.
What's your favorite sound of both clips? I could give you more information.
Two layers in the King's X clip, by the way!

very nice. what kind of mixer ? when you said cheap - it reminded me that i once used my 4 track cassette as a mixer to get to the stereo inputs of my computer when i was recording on computer. it worked fine.

i like the "Dogman" clip better. both sound the same sonic-ly (mic-wise) i think...the Dogman clip has more bounce and groove, but that's down to a better representative "take" or possibly mixing rather than chops or guitar (i think).
