texas genre question

i recently saw the movie "Machete". they have some of that tumbleweed guitar sound in the background. it's that tremolo/reverb/tape delayed/wavy sound. you know the sound. just imagine the tumbleweed and dust blowing by and the cacti in the background. pre gunfight "mood setting".

my question is; where does that stuff come from? who where some of the players of the past that came up with it or perfected that tone/vibe/feeling?

just want to study it a bit, and i have no clue where to start.
