  • "DRONE" (drums, bass, guitar. SLEEP SABBATH DOOM DRONE MUSIC.)

Just wrote this little DOOM ROCK ditty, taking elements of SLEEP AND SABBATH to try and pay homage to the almighty

any comments or constructive criticism are appreciated

For my main guitar riff sound chain it is mainly analog: guitar--> Black Arts Pharaoh Fuzz pedal --> RatII Keeley Modded --> Tech 21 Oxford --> Recabinet Impulses

Mission accomplished I'd say. I'd suggest a little work on the mix, as it all sounds a little 'distant' at the moment (too much reverb perhaps?), but other than that, I think you've got something there.

Thanks brutha, much respect for the constructive criticism, you have a great ear!!!

I took some of the reverb off and worked on volumes of tracks.

Into a fuzz AND a distortion? Nice. This is delightfully dissonant.

Well, you made a believer out of me!

My only suggestion would be to use a lighter hand with the compression and let the music breathe a bit more ... we have volume controls for a reason! It goes both up AND down!

I feel that it would sound heavier if you used less compression and pushed the mix harder using rides than letting the comps do the work... just my 2 cents, musically I love the tones and playing.

Thanks Twilight!! Thank you for the feedback, what are rides? I put compression on the master so it is at the same loudness as the music produced today but I accidently turned it up a bit louder, the mix guru that I attended classes with at Sam Ash did not like ozone5 compressor loudness at all though cause the dynamics go away some.

Rides are individual fader moves ... volume up/down, panning, automatic aux sends, etc.

cool man, that is what I do when I mix. when I am done mixing I put the ozone5 on the master volume and brickwall slam it!!! lol it looses some dynamics and I am okay with that compromise to get my volume the same as other recordings, but Ill look into it more, I wish there was a better route. Your comment inspired me to lower the ozone5 master compression on my other song "where is there you are", but for this one I used a fuzz pedal from Amplitube as a demo on the guitar solo that expired and I don't want to buy it just yet, so I cant remix this song. Cheers

this pretty much sounds like how I recall sleep sounding the last time I heard 'em!

Ozone is deftinely a top shelf plugin, no doubt. I don't use bus compression, just a tape sim (Kramer Master Tape) on the output to catch a bit of the peaks. But then, I mix to a -12dB average and have the mastering guy sort out the overall loudness...

I agree that you are mixing the best way TO. That is what my instructor said to do, that the person that mixes should not be the one that also masters. He said it takes like 10 years of study and work to get good at mastering, which is completely different than mixing.

I just mix without any plugins on the master, to do my equalizing mainly. Then I put the ozone5 on the master and re-adjust all the volume levels and do some final tweaking. The tape sim sounds like a good idea
