  • Who's good at identifying a chord by ear?

I can't. I hope someone can help me figure out what chords are being played here. I looped this about a half a dozen times, then let the last loop slide back into the mix. I wasn't sure if hearing it in the context of the bass and drums would help or hinder.

    Velocity of Love - segment.mp3

Here's the link to the full song if anyone's interested. The guitar part I'm interested in starts just past the 3-minute mark.

Grace Rose - Velocity of Love

Thanks all. And, BTW, any idea what kind of guitar/pickups this might be? I'm thinking Strat.

    Damn. I think it is:

    Fmaj7-Am7-G(of some kind)-Dm7-Em7

Listening to the whole song helped me (I think!).

Hopefully someone else tackles this too!

    Cool groove.

Edit: also think the tone sounds like it could be the middle position of a 2 humbucker guitar.

I ran it through RiffStation for you. It sucks at picking up 6th, 7th and 9ths but is should give you a jumping off point.

I can't do tab in this chat box, but I'll put the fret numbers across under the chord name, from low E to high E. This is what I got from the looped sample:

            Fmaj7
            X-8-10-9-10-8

            Am7
            X-12-14-12-13-12

            G
            X-10-12-12-12-10

            Dm7
            X-5-7-5-6-5

            Em7
            X-7-9-7-8-7

Thanks for the effort guys. I'll give this a go when I get home from work tonight.

Those were the chord shapes that I came up with, too. Thanks for taking the time to type them out, Beau!

Wow Beau! I think you nailed it. It sounds perfect. Now . . . if I can just nail that funky strumming.

Here's how I "charted" it out:

P.S. When doing those barre-chords, what technique do you use to mute the bottom E string?

                  Thanks;

Re: Who's good at identifying a chord by ear?

I like to aim my pick attack a little towards to bottom of the guitar at an angle to clear the bassy strings. Play up towards the neck too, as it rounds out the sound a little more. Soft, like petting a cat.

Or if you have a hair scrunchy laying around, you could just djent it up and put that scrunchy at the nut.

Poke the top string with the tip of your barring index finger just enough to keep it from ringing out.

Yeah. I thought about that too. But that will take some practice. (Doesn't it all?) I'm accustomed to reaching across, when I barre.

                          (Would we call this . . . barre-hopping?)

It'll be easier with this song because you're keeping the same barr down for teh whole piece
