Freebird Chirping Sound

does anyone know how to make the chirping sound in the beginning and in the middle of Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird? I've seen videos where it looks like Gary is doing smething almost behind the saddle of his Gibson SG.

I know I'm bumping a month old topic.. But he simply puts his hand at the 22 fret to block off the strings, then uses the edge of the slide on the bottom string back and forth.. it takes a little practice to find the right way of doing it to actually sound right, but it's quite simple..
