I didn't make this clip, but I thought this was a surprising and convenient way to get a feel for the tones of these vintage combos, some of which I have never come across even once. FWIW, the Supro comes in at about :55, and has a really great sound (not that the others don't have their own magic, too):

Boy - every one of those amps has a cool sound. Great playing too. That guy has that Clapton stuff down.

I liked both Gibsons and both Supros maybe best.

But really, I liked them all.

I started out on Supros. First a little one and then a two 12 Bass Amp. Then I got a Twin Reverb in 1967 and haven't played a Supro since.

But I do love these Gibson GA20's. They're a two 6V6 amp like a tweed Deluxe but different. Mine came with the original Jensen P12R alnico speaker. It's my favorite amp for slide. Gets that Ry Cooder tone -or it would if I could play like Ry Cooder.

Killer amps for an overdriven tone. The secret is to plug into the microphone input - it's hotter than the guitar input.

Yeah, Lew, after playing a gazillion half stacks and boutique amps, I am VERY impressed with the sound of all those amps. They record BEAUTIFULLY. Interesting that each one has its own "portable fury" going on, so to speak. You know, that little bitty amp is really bad-a** and huge sounding, but in reality its just a tiny little amp. I love it! Maybe a new 'sonic venture' for me...

I quit playing through anything over 25 watts quite a few years ago.

But I play through blackface Deluxe Reverbs or Princeton Reverbs mostly. They get a better clean sound and I can still drive them into distortion and a singing tone easily.

I love that Gibson GA20 that I posted a picture of - but it starts breaking up really early.

For me, little 20 watt amps are where it's at.

If I need more volume or a bigger sound I just bring two!

20 watts with a Fender works great.
Less with a Class A (yeah, I know what the amp techs are thinking all that "smart tech stuff"). 10 to 12 Class A would probably do the trick. The Mojave Coyote certainly doesn't lack for balls, I know that much.

Always loved the little dinky amps. The Alamo and the Univox sound excellent.

QUESTION: Is it just me, or does the Gibson at the first part seem to have JTM-45 'bark & bite'?

Pretty fun listen. I have one of those Skylarks. Found it in an abandoned house in the desert and spruced it up a bit. They're nice amps for the money.

That was very enjoyable to listen to. Recording style was a little strange. I would be happy with any one of those amps, though!
