  • EMG 81/89 clips...

OK, I promised to put up some sound samples as soon I got my pups installed, so here it is...

I've got a Schecter C1+ and I put the 81 in the bridge and the 89 in the neck.
Each clip consists of 3 samples really. 81(bridge, humbucker), 89(neck, humbucker) and 89(neck, splitted to single coil).
There are 3 clips, the first clean is pure guitar into the computer, no fx, no tweaking at all, EQ at 12 o clock.
On the other 2(Dirty, Lead) i've added som distortion and delay.

I set the distortion to about 40% so they don't need much to go over the top.
OK, take a listen, but please don't bash me for sloppy playing!! I just improvised some stuff to get it up there as soon as possible. Eventually I'll get up some real songs, and then you can bash me all you want!

Yeah, but you have to consider that I recorded them super-clean into the computer with no effects and EQ set at 12 o clock. It's like plugging a guitar into the amp with everything but the volume set to 0. So the sound is as bad as it gets, with some tweaking and effects they are pretty fat clean too...
I didn't put any effects there now for you to hear the naked sound.

very nice playing, nice sounding pickups, even on clean i liked them, though they are a tad too high output for clean sounds.

Thanks, I actually think they are decent for cleans too. But you've gotta roll off the volume, at least on the 81 and the 89 in humbucker mode... In these clips I had the volume all the way up.
When I get around to tweak my settings some I'm confident I'll get some great tones out of them. So far I'm happy with my purchase.

By the way, what about the finnish in your signature??

You mean the Duncan Designed HB 103's? Still got 'em... If I sell it in the future I might pop them in there again.

                    Thanks fender...

So what do you think of the differences between the pups?
I think that In the Clean clip you can really hear the difference between the 81 and 89(treblier/bassier) + the splitted to single 89 which has much lower output and a cleaner sound. You can actually hear some distortion from the 81 and 89 in hb-mode even though it's as clean as it gets?

When it comes to distortion my feeling is that 81 is suited for rhytm in metal, the 89 humbucker for more sort of rock sound, while the 89 single coil has a nice singing tone to use for lead?

I've also got separate volume controls for each pup so I could always experiment with using both pups at the same time, and play with the volume to fine adjust the tone for what I want...

I really wish I had a bigass amp to test these in!

Thanks Metalman! You know, that's one thing I really like about these pups. Since they're active and there's hardly any magnetism to talk about, they're really quiet!

I can put the guitar down with pickup-volume on full and there's no buzz in the speakers at all... A HUGE advantage when recording at home, on my Peavey with passives, the monitor causes real bad noises, especially on the single-coil...

Oh, now I see you've got EMG's too? So this information was unnecessary, haha...
By the way, did you find the 18v-mod a big improvment? I don't know if I can fit another battery in there but I might try it sometime...

I like both versions! EMG isn΄t bad..every pup need some tweaks to sound as good as they can.
