  • 1st Album Brown Sound

I revisited a handful of clips I did two years ago. This time I slapped that LePou Cab VST plugin on my guitar tracks, then
I attempted to EQ with my ears as close as I could stand it (without going crazy).

My guitar with original backing tracks:

    Runnin' With The Devil:
LLL - RWTD LePou 76 EQ

    You Really Got Me:
LLL - YRGM LePou 76 EQ

    Feel Your Love Tonight:
LLL - FYLT LePou 76 EQ

Harder to tell without one side being Eddie himself like your other clips, but it sounds great to me. Did you just take the old clips and run them through the VST, or make new recordings?

Sounds pretty close. The mids are a tad hard and a bit of a "squeek" in the upper mids, but it's probably closer than almost anybody can get. And by a "tad" and a "bit", it's really just a tiny amount.

Yes I took my 2 year old clips (exact ones as were in the side by side w/EVH comparison clips) and ran 'em
through the LePou Cab VST, EQ etc...

EQing drives me nuts because I try to perfect things. I eventually just had to stop and say, "sounds good".
So yeah, they're not 100% exact.

The LePou Cab really opened my eyes (ears) up to a part of the chain that I didn't do much with: the speakers.

The whole enchilada setup (mic'd in my bathroom!):

Strat (alder body, maple neck, AmStd trem w/Callaham parts, BK VHII humbucker, 500k V / 500k T)
        |
        EP3 preamp
        |
        Strymon El Capistan (one repeat)
        |
MXR 6 Band EQ (slight Ed frown)
        |
        Marshall (variac'd to 100v)
        |
        Avatar 1X12 Celestion Gold (haha)
        |
SM57 1" from cap, dead center
        |
        UA LA610MkII tube preamp
        |
        DAW

        LePou Cab v2 speaker iRs:
        - Celestion G12M20
        - JBL D120
        (both speakers equal volume)

        Waves IR-1 Stereo iR:
        - Sunset Studios Echo Chamber

        Waves Q10 Mono:
        - slightly different EQ for each tune

        Waves CLA76 Mono:
        - no compression; just for the slight "circuit ambiance"

        One little secret:

The brightness/top end/sizzle found on the first album is helped tremendously with the JBL D120 speaker.

NICE!!! Loved the tone of the first album, I think you nailed it, or as close as I could imagine anyone getting. Does anyone else remeber the story of Ted Nugent saying "I can sound like him if I had his rig", playing through Ed's rig and sounding nothing like him? So much of it's in the hands. but still, closer than I've ever gotten on any of my attempts.

                Thanks all.

The LePou Cab VST used a combination of the Celestion G12M20 and the JBL D120.

I remember the Nuge story, but it's also possible Ed may have pulled a fast one on him.

I did one more revisit of RWTD and super-focused my ears.

Here's a side-by-side comparison of Ed's original album tone (on left) with my guitar (on right):
