  • Triple Tracking a la Randy Rhoads

    EDIT: Now with sparkly chorus!

    CT x3trax Chorus

    ================================================== ===================

So here's a quick 'n' dirty attempt doing Crazy Train by triple tracking.

    CT x3trax 2

For the rhythm guitars, I played the rhythm 3 times, recorded each, then
panned these tracks - one left, one center, one right. The L & R were
attenuated slightly compared to the center.

For the solo fill, the same.

But wait... that's not all - if you listen now, I'll throw in a vibraslap for free!

(that's that fx in the beginning that kinda whirs and spins... see here and check this dude out -)

This only works because you played tight to yourself. Sounds good!

The palm mutes are getting a bit washed out, but hey, thats what can happen when copping randys tone

Thanks - yeah even the original tune has somewhat blurry palm mutes.

I'm not done with this one yet... I had a little too much hair going on for triple-tracking. My theory is if I knock the hair down
just a... hair (pun intended), that should do it.

And I have to figure out what slight chorus is going on and where it's coming from... and how to utilize it in a triple-tracked environment.

          Pretty decent approximation.

Sounds brilliant, as usual. You may not have to knock down the sides as low as you think; depends partially on what Pan Law your DAW is using. Also, you may get better/more accurate results by using an M/S processor, like Center from Waves instead of just ratcheting down the sides with level.

I love Triple Tracking. I have a few different ways of doing it. Most of the time I pan hard left, and hard right. Then I'll take two tracks together and pan them throughout the entire stereo spectrum. Most of the time I will back the level down a bit on the one covering the whole spectrum, and I may either make it brighter, or back it's gain way back.

              like this:

Great job and nice playing, by the way!!

Redid all tracks with less hair, different pick scrapes, slightly different EQ, and tried a Chorus.

Goes up to right before the solo.
