  • Midi expression pedal

If you're running amp sim plugs (BiasFX, Line 6 Gearbox, Peavey Revalver etc) there are a number of effects such as wahs and whammy pedals that can be operated with a midi controller. So ideally, you'd use an expression pedal with a midi connection, right? Well, I've tried googling for one, but everyone I find comes with a 6.3 mm connection plug (male), rather than a midi one. What gives?

Look at Roland and Behringer foot controllers, not stand alone expression pedals. They have expression via MIDI on the built in expression/volume pedal. At least the Roland does for sure, I own one. You would have to look into the Behringer.

Had a look around. Most standalone pedals will need a midi converter module in between, it seems. Roland and Behringer seems to be the easiest option. I just need it for two bars in a recording I'm doing, so not really worth buying. Meh, I'll get one if I decide to record more in the future.

Ha, yes -- seems extreme for two measures of recorded music, especially since there are so many workarounds in the studio.

Well, I need it for a wah effect. I'm uncertain how to map that in the DAW, that's above my expertise level, even though the amp plugin has a wah.

            Re: Midi expression pedal

Which amp sim are you using? Perhaps it has automation parameters you can use in your DAW.

Or if you have any other MIDI controller you could maybe map it to a knob and write to it afetrwards

Agreed. I would play the part and automate it afterwards with either a wah sim or just EQ.

CC MIDI is very easy to do in something like Mainstage. What DAW are you using?

                  Re: Midi expression pedal

I use a Behringer FCB-1010, which can be found used pretty cheaply these days, and there are good PC editors for it (as well as unofficial firmware that expands what it can do). I never have seen just an expression pedal with a midi out. It would need some kind of display (or software) to tell it what to control, though.

There is at least one (can't remember the brand ATM) but it's more than what I can motivate for how little I'd use it. For now, anyway. But yeah, it does exist and has a small digital display. Basically it's an oversized Crybaby housing.
