  • Iron Maiden - Wasted Years Test

    UPDATE:

Even closer... done past solo (crash course learned it, got it down smooth in about 30 mins)

    Switch to EV-L speaker iRs
    more EQ fine tuning
quick solo take (w/ corresponding rhythm)
    SSL Comp on "2"

    That's all for this one.

    OLDER:

    Closer...

What I did here was more fine-tuning ear EQing and slight mix changes.

Also, the intro - I figured he (Dave or Adrian; not sure which) was very lightly muting the drone E string in between notes.
...and added delay to the spacious EMT140 verb.

Tried to get each player's vibe (Dave is looser, Adrian is accurate), tone and parts down.

    OLDEST:

Using the real ISO'd drums & bass:

Once again awesome. Almost still seems a little drier than the original, but I'm diggin' the hell out of these. What iR's did you go with?

Thanks - this one's a rough (approximation) take.

So, supposedly they used Gallien-Kruger 250MLs for the recording of this album (pure SS amp w chorus) versus the usual fare of
Marshalls, MXR 10-band EQ, MXR Dist+, etc...

      I did an "educated guess".

      Used SIR2 with Ownhammer's G65-OR (based on 1982 Celestion G12-65), SM57 iR.

Roughly matched the guitar tone with ears...
...sounded to me like a little thump in lows, scooped mids & slight extended highs (hence 8k,10k not cut).

      Rhythm guitars:

The intro guitar part was EQ somewhat differently in the mid range and highs.

All guitars have "cheesy 80's" chorus; tastefully applied.

      EMT140 plate for verb.

For gear I used SH-5 pickup, MXR 10 Band (smiley but with low-mids & lows flat) boosted +6dB, my usual Marshall

sounds pretty cool, especially the beginning. I think the original rhythm guitars have less bass and more mids, but I don't know what those frequencies would be.

My get closer matching them to parts on the album when only guitars are going on, like the beginning of sea of madness.
