  • Cool 80's sounding backing track ...

This is my own creation, whose official purpose is part of the audition process for my band, but I had so much fun jamming over the backing that I thought I would make it available for y'all to jam along with.

It's pure 80's style LA metal, heavily inspired by old RATT.

    Enjoy!!

Great tone! Very 80's. DEEP DISH DISTORTION... to coin your very own description. I likes it.

Hehe ... glad you like it, Matt.
I tracked it with my Jem, which always hits the board very hot. The setting is my own special blend, which I call "80's Rhythm", tho in actuality it's a bit thicker than your typical 80's tone ...

Wow, some 80s rock to try my new amp

I changed amp three times in the last couple of months (I HATE modellers), and since I couldn't find another YCV40 cheap, I finally got the Peavey Ultra and man am I happy I did. Just need another speaker though. But with the master voluume, I can actually record silently with this beast... and I will, thanks TO.

Maybe not today but in the next few days.

Okay, I'm working on it, Ben. Gimme a few nights. I figured out a nice little number for the first verse, it took about 5 minutes to find something I liked, but I grinded on the second part chorus and exceeded my hour time limit. For some reason I'm blocked when it comes down to the A5, C5, D5, E5 portion of it. Can't come up with anything that sounds musical and not contrived. Still have many holes in my playing as well.

BTW, the first part is VERY Ratt/Dokken inspired - I love that sound when you drop the root tone down a half step, sounds great.

You almost have the 2nd riff down, but it's actually
                        A5 - D5
                        D5 - C5 - A5
                        A5 - C5 - G5

... with a couple of passing notes in there.

Right, I can't understand the writers block on this one. Basically, with that progression, you can resolve on pretty much any note you want to within the framework of the progression - you *almost* can't miss with A,C,E until you hit the G5. It's almost as simple straight ahead A-minor with an E-minor ending as you can get... so meat and potatoes 80's metal. But, there you go, whatever I play either sounds sing-songy or shameless wanking... and bad wanking at that

Friday night I'll cut something. Don't hold your breath, my original solos end up generally sounding schmaltzy. But, I need to get back into jamming. Lately, I've been trying to improve HO/PO's and working on speedy alternate picking (and Beatles cover tunes), so the "Free Form Jazz Odyssey" improvisation stuff has taken a back seat.

Perhaps a snakeskin Wayne Rock Legend is in order... Maybe I'll squeeze into the Mr. Scary shirt to get the old school vibe going.
