So if I get an MXL V69M tube mic.....

I've been reading really good things about the MXL V69M tube powed microphone. Is it still a good thing to put it through a tube preamp like the Presonus tube pre Studio Projects VTB-1 or should I just use the phantom power in my interface?

Also, has anybody used one of these to mic a cabinet (hard rock to metal) or is the old standby SM-57 still the best way to go.

I have one and I think it's great; I also have Neumans & other killer mics in my studio and it stands up against all of them with certain things - especially my wife's vocals. As a matter of fact, you can hear the MXL V69 Tube mic in this forum room- just look for "Pilar's Christmas music" - it's just piano, bass & brushes, but you'll hear how nice the mic sounds on her voice. It's all I use on her (I use a 414 on my own)

Go K2 totally. Different price range, sounds like the early NT2 but with a tube - nice harmonics. I liked it a lot. But the V69 aint no slouch. Another SERIOUSLY worthy contender in the lower-price range mic is the SE range - the SE5600 tube, the Gemini tube - both of those are KILLER. I would buy an SE over the Marshall. But for $300 for a good sounding tube mic - the MXL is great. I love it.

Wow--that is some clear stuff! I like the way you got that mike to sound. I really, really dug Christmas Day. Your wife sings like an angel dude. You play great also.

You could, I suppose; some engineers used old tube condensers & FET's to mic guitars, but I'd try simply using the venrable SM57 on your cab and then putting the V69 10 feet away or so, and then blend the two sounds. You'll never add verb to your guitar tracks again (provided it's a cool room). I've done that for 20 years, and it still works. Nothing beats a great tube amp & a 57 - nothing.

If you have a nice tube pre, hell yes use it! It's not redundant.

Very cool! Already have the SM57. I don't know if the tube pre is cool yet, but I'll give it a shot. Thanks a million for the tips.
