I am an OG VH fan, that said, there were some decent Van Hagar albums, 5150 was not one of those IMHO. Strangely in later interviews (I just finished reading Eruption) Ed said he didn't like the tones on the first VH albums. To many of us they are still near the pinnacle of heavy guitar tones.

Yeah, not bad but not my favorite -EVH's tone tends to have a warm mellow sheen of modulation encasing the guitar and amp sound on the first 2 examples -very of that time.

I had heard the Poundcake one before -thats a total DLH style song without DLH -so they were still doing some of that with Hagar which is fun...

Whats interesting to me is I much much much prefer that later 1995 Seventh Sign tone you posted where some of the warm mod sheen is taken away and the life of the amp is more present over the earlier 1991 stuff you posted....

I agree on the sheen, I like SS the best of those examples. Kind of like Extreme's Pornograffiti, I loved that when it came out, now when I listen to it it sounds too "glossy" and 80s, I prefer the somewhat rawer production on III Sides, and the very raw Waiting for the Punchline tones are my favorite, but they are a totally different sound for Nuno so harder to make a direct comparison.

That's Eventide.

Ed was an early adopter of the Eventide. Definitely some on the 2nd album, and possibly 1st.

The Eventide H910 came out in 1975.

I think NE was talking about the Van Hagar clips, they have more "glossy" production than the first 4 albums, not just the harmonizer. I'm not a fan of a lot of the 80s (over-)production now, it sounds dated to me. VH didn't really suffer from that until the early Hagar stuff, but it still wasn't as bad as a lot from that era.

I didn't think he used the Eventide until the Hagar years, but apparently I'm wrong, I didn't know they came out in the 70s. And yes, apparently Ed loved it, but I don't think that's the "sheen" we are talking about.

Yeah, you are right Devastone -referring to your later examples of EVH in the links -not LLL's early EVH stuff -which I dug all of those tones.

It's that extra warm sort of modulation wrapping around the later tones (those first 2 examples Devastone posted) that I'm not the biggest fan of .... but the 1995 tone clip I dig again,

Maybe, but you can get spot-on "brown sound" (an actual misnomer) with a Gorilla amp, distortion box and delay.

At least, that's what I read on the internetz...

On 5150, the old Marshall Superlead was starting to go out. And he was using EMG's a lot on that record thanks to the Steinberger guitar. OU812 managed to get some work out of the old SL but was mostly JCM 800's. Then the Soldano SLO from For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge until the 5150 amps on that tour. By the time Balance came out, the SL had a once-over and was brought back to life and used on the record. Seventh Seal is the SL as is Big Fat Money, if I'm not mistaken.

Nailed the amp tones pretty well in all truth. Definitely could hear the Eventide (which I really like). Did you use all the same exact gear and guitars, etc on all the sound clips? If not, tell me more about what you did when you get a chance to do so.
